Prominent Sydney Aboriginal leader Mick Mundine has been arrested over allegations of historical child sexual assault involving a girl who was 15 at the time, NSW Police said.
The 79-year-old was taken into custody by detectives in Redfern at about 7am on Thursday and later taken to Newtown Police Station. No charges have been laid and inquiries were continuing.
Police said the alleged offences occurred in June 1986. Strike Force Millersburg was established in December 2025 to investigate the historical allegations in Redfern, in Sydney’s inner south.
The arrest followed extensive inquiries by detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad, police said.
Mr Mundine has been chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company for decades and is a prominent figure in Redfern’s Aboriginal community.
The organisation has been involved in housing and community development in the area, including the $70 million Pemulwuy Project, which was completed in 2023.
Mr Mundine is the brother of Australian boxing great Tony Mundine, who died in August, and the uncle of former world champion boxer Anthony Mundine.
