Mikel Arteta has indicated that Viktor Gyökeres remains part of his plans at Arsenal, despite the striker’s lack of regular first-team football and growing speculation over his future.
The Sweden international has played only 56 minutes in the Premier League this season, with Kai Havertz currently preferred as Arsenal’s attacking focal point. That has raised questions over whether Gyökeres could leave the club in January.
Arteta backs Viktor Gyökeres’ Arsenal future
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s next Premier League fixture, Arteta praised the 28-year-old’s attitude and contribution away from the pitch.
“Viktor transmits is an incredible will and determination and work rate to improve, help the team,” the Arsenal manager said.
“That’s Viktor every single day, regardless of his position, whether he scores a goal or not. And that’s why he’s always an option to play.”
Arteta’s comments suggest Gyökeres has not been pushed out of contention, even though Havertz has been given the leading role in attack at the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign.
The forward scored 14 goals during Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning season last term, but his opportunities have been limited so far this season. He has previously expressed frustration at his status within the squad.
Reports have claimed Arsenal would seek £64 million for Gyökeres should they agree to sell him, with European clubs said to be monitoring his situation ahead of the January transfer window.
Gyökeres makes impression for Sweden
Gyökeres used the international break to underline his goalscoring ability, finding the net four times in four UEFA Nations League matches for Sweden.
His goals included strikes against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania, providing a reminder of the threat he can pose when given regular opportunities.
Arsenal are competing across domestic and European competitions, giving Gyökeres the chance to challenge for a greater role. For now, Arteta’s public backing indicates that the striker remains an option rather than a player who has been written out of the club’s plans.
