Elon Musk’s America PAC has spent roughly $800,000 backing Republican candidates in key House and Senate contests ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections, marking its first independent expenditures of the general election.
The disclosure, released on Wednesday evening, covers spending between August 18 and August 31, with more than $700,000 directed towards Senate races. The largest investment was in Texas, where the super PAC spent more than $247,000 to support Republican nominee Ken Paxton in his contest against Democrat James Talarico. America PAC also targeted Senate races in Maine, Ohio, New Hampshire, Iowa, Michigan and Alaska, including spending of about $170,000 for Maine Senator Susan Collins and $105,000 for Ohio Senator Jon Husted. Nearly $90,000 went towards eight House races involving Republicans Derrick Van Orden in Wisconsin, Mike Lawler in New York, Jen Kiggans in Virginia, Tom Kean Jr in New Jersey, Scott Perry, Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie in Pennsylvania, and Scott Singer in Florida.
The filing came days after Musk met Speaker Mike Johnson in Texas. Musk’s America PAC spending adds to Republican financial advantage
Republicans already hold a substantial fundraising advantage over Democrats, helped by President Donald Trump’s MAGA Inc super PAC, which had more than $403 million in cash at the end of July. The Texas contest has become a particular concern for Republicans after Mr Paxton defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the party’s primary process, turning what had been viewed as a safe Republican seat into a closely watched race.
Mr Talarico has significantly out-raised Mr Paxton. Federal Election Commission records show the Democratic campaign reported more than $68.5 million in receipts through June 30, compared with about $9 million for Mr Paxton, while Mr Talarico had more than $21.5 million in cash available at the end of that period. Musk has reportedly authorised America PAC to spend up to $120 million on a Republican turnout operation in November, building on its role in supporting Donald Trump during the 2024 election. The group is expected to focus on door-knocking, digital advertising and direct mail aimed at mobilising conservative voters.
