Elon Musk has said he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States, describing the proposed gift as “the first of many”.
The billionaire did not explain how the shares would be distributed or provide further details on how the pledge would be carried out.
His announcement came a day after artificial intelligence company Anthropic said it would commit 5% of its shares to a new “public benefit” fund.
About 73 million children live in the US, according to Census Bureau data. SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 on Friday, with the company due to report quarterly earnings on Tuesday.
Musk is SpaceX’s largest shareholder, holding a 10.5% stake, according to FactSet. His holding included 4.8 billion shares when the company went public earlier this year, briefly making him the world’s first trillionaire.
Musk, described as the world’s richest person, is currently worth about $904 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
