New York Governor Kathy Hochul has vowed to stay ahead of Cody Wilson after he challenged the state’s ban on 3D-printed guns, warning that unregulated weapons made at home could pose a serious threat to public safety.
“You can tell Cody I will get ahead of him next,” Ms Hochul said, accusing Mr Wilson of intentionally seeking to circumvent the law.
She said New York law prohibited people from possessing 3D-printed guns and criticised the idea of allowing weapons to be produced in private homes without background checks or regulatory oversight.
“It is the law that you cannot have 3D-printed guns in the state of New York,” she said.
Ms Hochul raised the prospect of someone with severe mental health problems making a ghost gun at a kitchen table and using it to attack children at a school. She also described the unregulated production of weapons as creating “a munitions factory where there was none”.
She objected to the public promotion of such activity as a legitimate challenge to her administration, saying: “If people broadcast that as if it’s a proper thing to do is challenge me on that, then I say go for it. Because you’re trampling in the wrong space.”
