Newcastle are stepping up their interest in AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori as they consider defensive reinforcements for the January transfer window, according to a report by Football Insider.
The Magpies have endured a difficult start after losing several important players during the summer and failing to replace all of them effectively. Their latest setback came at home to Aston Villa, increasing the pressure for changes when the market reopens.
Newcastle consider January move for Fikayo Tomori
Manager Matthias Jaissle is understood to have impressed at Newcastle and is believed to need time, alongside improvements to the squad. Strengthening the defence is reportedly one of the club’s priorities, with Tomori emerging as a potential target.
The former Chelsea defender has made more than 200 appearances for AC Milan but has fallen out of favour this season. At 28, Tomori offers top-level and European experience, while his situation in Italy has prompted suggestions that he could be ready for a return to England.
Tomori’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, meaning Milan could demand only a modest fee if Newcastle pursue a January deal. However, the centre-back may instead choose to see out his agreement and assess his options in May.
