One man has died and 13 others have been injured after gunmen opened fire on a crowd in Chicago’s Washington Park neighbourhood, police said.
The shooting took place at about 11.37pm on Saturday, 29 August, in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue on the city’s South Side, as officers were attempting to disperse a large gathering.
Chicago Police Department said several unknown attackers fired into the crowd. A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Rontonio M. Guterz, according to ABC7 Chicago. No police officers were injured.
At least six of the other victims were reported to be in good condition. They included a 34-year-old man shot in the shoulder, a 39-year-old man wounded in the right leg and arm, and a 40-year-old woman shot in the shoulder.
A 45-year-old woman was shot in the left leg and took herself to St Bernard Hospital, while a 26-year-old woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. A 42-year-old man was also shot in the leg.
Police said three further victims – a 37-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man and a 35-year-old man – were taken to hospitals, although their conditions were initially unclear.
Four more victims were located later on Sunday. A 47-year-old woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, while women aged 21, 23 and 43 were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.
The circumstances surrounding the gathering, including why so many people had assembled, remained unclear. Police had not released descriptions of the shooters and no suspects were in custody.

Area One detectives are investigating the Chicago mass shooting. Cook County Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Paul Rutherford, the organisation’s executive director, said information could be provided anonymously and urged anyone who had seen or heard anything relevant to come forward.
