A woman in her 20s has died after the car in which she was travelling crashed into a tree on Indian Ocean Drive at Breton Bay, about an hour north of Perth.
The single-vehicle crash happened at about 7.45am on Thursday. Emergency services had to make their way through fallen debris and bushes to reach the vehicle.
The woman was trapped inside with critical injuries, but could not be saved. The driver and two other passengers were taken from the car with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Indian Ocean Drive was closed in both directions between K.W Road and Gingin Brook Road while the crash was dealt with. The road has since reopened.
The coastal highway has been the scene of several serious crashes. Two Indonesian nationals died in a head-on collision at Neergabby in October 2024, while a man and a woman were killed in another head-on crash at Wedge Island in September 2025.
Several weeks later, two men survived a collision between a car and a truck near Military Road in Wilbinga.
Western Australia’s Deputy Premier, Rita Saffioti, said the Government had carried out “significant upgrades on Indian Ocean Dr” and urged motorists to remain focused.
“In particular, when you’re driving long distances, all of those types of activity, stay focused, take breaks, and get home safely,” she said.
