Florian Wirtz has been branded a potential “waste of money” after a difficult start to life at Liverpool, with Jason Cundy questioning whether the Germany international can turn his form around.
The 23-year-old has faced growing criticism since moving to Anfield, with scrutiny intensifying after Liverpool’s 3-0 home defeat by Manchester City at the weekend.
Wirtz established himself as a highly regarded player during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, but his performances in English football have so far failed to meet expectations. Liverpool’s supporters are increasingly impatient to see a greater influence from the midfielder given the club’s substantial investment in his signing.
Jason Cundy criticises Florian Wirtz transfer
Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy delivered a stark assessment of Wirtz’s Liverpool form.
“I think he could go down as the biggest waste of money the Premier League has ever seen, I genuinely do,” he said.
Cundy also questioned whether Wirtz possesses the physical presence and character required to impose himself on matches.
“I think I’ve seen enough. I’m not sure he has the physicality or personality. When I say personality, I mean, ‘Give me the ball, I want to influence the game.’”
He added: “Sometimes players can give the ball away, but you’re showing you want the ball and show what you’ve got. I don’t see any of that.”
Cundy said Wirtz appeared to be struggling under the pressure at Anfield, telling the broadcaster: “He’s having a tough time. He looks scared, he looks frightened.”
“An uncomfortable conversation needs to take place,” he added.
Could Florian Wirtz leave Liverpool?
There is already reported concern over Wirtz’s future at Liverpool, with the club needing to see an improvement soon.
If his form does not change, Liverpool could consider offers from major clubs that remain interested in him. However, the longer his difficulties continue, the more challenging it may become for the club to recoup its investment through a future sale.
