Troy Deeney has criticised Florian Wirtz after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth, claiming the Germany international is yet to show he belongs in the Premier League.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, the former Watford striker and pundit acknowledged Wirtz’s technical ability but questioned his confidence and influence on games.
“He just doesn’t look like he belongs in this league. What I mean by that is, he’s clearly talented; clearly he’s got the technical ability,” Deeney said.
“But it’s like he doesn’t believe he’s going to score and doesn’t believe he’s going to impact the game. Liverpool need more from him.”
Deeney also argued that Wirtz’s reluctance was affecting Liverpool’s attacking rhythm, saying the team’s tempo dropped whenever the midfielder received possession.
“The rest of the team are starting to disbelieve because every time it goes to him, the tempo slows down. And when they get back, it slows the whole thing down. Iraola just in front of us was absolutely blowing his top,” he added.
Florian Wirtz yet to justify Liverpool price tag
Wirtz has struggled to justify the significant fee involved in his move from Bayer Leverkusen, despite producing occasional flashes of his ability.
The 23-year-old has recorded seven goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances for Liverpool, figures which have increased scrutiny from supporters and pundits.
He was unable to make a decisive impact during the first half against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium and was substituted in the 71st minute. Jamie Carragher also criticised his performance on commentary, describing his display before the interval as “nothing”.
Andoni Iraola pointed to Wirtz’s limited involvement in the build-up to Alexander Isak’s winning goal, but Deeney’s assessment reflects the growing pressure on the playmaker to produce more consistently.
