A flood watch was in force across large parts of south-central and southern Arizona overnight on Sunday, with the National Weather Service warning that excessive rainfall could trigger flooding until 5am on Monday, August 31.
The watch covered much of the Phoenix metropolitan area, including central Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Glendale, Avondale, Tempe, Mesa, Queen Creek and Apache Junction. It also extended across parts of Pinal and Gila counties, including Casa Grande, Florence, Globe, Miami and Superior.
Further south, areas under the watch included Tucson, Green Valley, Marana, Vail, Nogales, Sierra Vista, Benson and Bisbee, as well as the Santa Catalina, Rincon, Huachuca and Santa Rita mountain ranges.
The weather service said flooding caused by excessive rainfall remained possible across the affected areas. Several flash flood warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued in parts of Maricopa, Pinal, Pima, Mohave, Coconino and Cochise counties during the evening.
Residents were advised to monitor weather updates and avoid driving through flooded roads, where even shallow water can conceal dangerous conditions or sweep vehicles away.
