Six alleged offenders have been arrested after a stolen car was pursued across Melbourne and stopped on the Monash Freeway, causing the closure of all outbound lanes at Warrigal Road.
Specialist police surrounded the vehicle at Chadstone shortly after midday on Tuesday, with images showing several people lying face down on the road as officers detained them.
The incident followed an alleged aggravated burglary at a property in Clonaig Street, Brighton East, just after 5.30am. Police said an occupant was woken by noises inside the home before two cars were stolen and driven away.
One of the vehicles, a Nissan four-wheel-drive, was later seen being driven erratically on Eastlink. Police monitored it through several eastern and south-eastern suburbs before intercepting it in Chadstone.
“Six occupants of the vehicle were arrested and are currently being interviewed,” police said.
No one was injured during the arrest, according to police. The second stolen vehicle was recovered after being involved in a collision in Endeavour Hills.
Traffic on the Monash Freeway was diverted on to Toorak and Burke roads, with drivers able to re-enter the freeway at Dandenong and Wellington roads.
