A Sky Sports statistic shown during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town on Friday night appears to be inaccurate or, at the very least, seriously misleading.
The graphic claimed that Liverpool had won all 22 matches in which they had gone two goals ahead away from home, in a run stretching back to December 2016. However, recent Premier League results show that the figure cannot be correct if it refers simply to any match in which the Reds established a 2-0 lead.
Liverpool were 2-0 up at Chelsea in January 2022 after early goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, but the hosts fought back to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge. Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic scored before half-time to cancel out the visitors’ advantage.
There is another clear example from last season. Liverpool held a 2-0 lead at Leeds United in December 2025, only for the match at Elland Road to finish 3-3 after a late equaliser from Ao Tanaka.
The statistic may have been intended to refer only to matches in which Liverpool were 2-0 ahead at half-time. That narrower definition would exclude both games: Chelsea had levelled before the interval, while Liverpool’s second goal against Leeds came shortly after the restart.
Even under that interpretation, however, the qualification was not made clear in the on-screen graphic, leaving viewers to question precisely what Sky Sports’ statistic was measuring.
Liverpool secure first win under Andoni Iraola
The disputed statistic came during a much more positive evening for Liverpool, as Andoni Iraola recorded his first competitive victory as the club’s head coach.
Alexander Isak scored twice inside the opening nine minutes at Portman Road, giving Liverpool a commanding early lead against Ipswich. The Sweden international’s goals, both assisted by Cody Gakpo, provided a welcome response after a difficult first season at Anfield.
Liverpool had begun the new campaign with successive 2-2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, but looked considerably more organised in Suffolk. They also kept their first clean sheet of the Iraola era as the new manager’s side controlled the game after their explosive start.
There remains plenty for Iraola to improve, with more demanding tests ahead, but the win at Ipswich offered encouraging early signs following his appointment as Arne Slot’s successor.
