Six people have been arrested after a stolen vehicle linked to an alleged aggravated burglary was intercepted on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway.
Police stopped the Nissan four-wheel-drive in Chadstone shortly after midday on Tuesday, following a pursuit through eastern and south-eastern suburbs. Specialist officers surrounded the vehicle and detained its six occupants.
Images from the scene showed several people lying face down on the road as armed officers, detectives and uniformed police stood nearby.
The incident began shortly after 5.30am, when police were called to a property in Clonaig Street, Brighton East. An occupant had woken after hearing noises inside the home, police said, and two cars were allegedly stolen.
One of the vehicles was later spotted being driven erratically on Eastlink. Police monitored it before intercepting it in Chadstone, according to a statement.
“Six occupants of the vehicle were arrested and are currently being interviewed,” police said.
No one was injured during the arrests. The second stolen vehicle was recovered after it was involved in a collision in Endeavour Hills.
All outbound lanes of the Monash Freeway at Warrigal Road were closed during the police operation, with traffic diverted on to Toorak and Burke roads. Drivers could rejoin the freeway at Dandenong and Wellington roads.
