Erik ten Hag has defended his decision to make Bruno Fernandes Manchester United captain, acknowledging that the midfielder can be emotional but insisting he remains a driven winner.
Ten Hag, who managed United from the summer of 2022 until October 2024, said Fernandes was the best option for the team despite having both strengths and weaknesses.
Ten Hag defends Bruno Fernandes captain decision
“I think it was good for the team, the best solution, and for him it was good as well,” Ten Hag told The Athletic. “Obviously he has some pros and cons, but he has great game understanding, he’s a top professional, and he always gives his best; lifestyle good.”
He added: “Every day, he goes to the limit; he’s driving it. Sometimes he’s getting emotional, but he’s a winner.”
Fernandes has produced important goals and assists during his Manchester United career, although his suitability for the captaincy remains a divisive issue among supporters. Some have questioned his conduct during difficult moments and high-profile matches.
Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his two full seasons at Old Trafford, but his tenure did not win universal approval before he left the club in October 2024.
Fernandes is expected to remain influential for United, although the 2026/27 campaign has not begun easily for him. His long-term future is also unresolved, with the midfielder yet to sign a new contract.
