Three young children were taken to hospital after a jumping castle was lifted into the air by strong winds at a park in Sydney’s inner south.
Emergency services were called to Gardiner Park in Banksia, about 12km south of the city centre, shortly after 1.20pm on Saturday.
NSW Ambulance said a preschool-aged boy and girl suffered head injuries, while a baby sustained minor injuries. A woman was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
All three children were in a stable condition after being treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital.
The incident occurred as a cool change swept across New South Wales, bringing strong north-westerly winds to Sydney. Gusts of more than 80km/h were recorded at Sydney Airport late on Saturday afternoon.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds, with peak gusts of up to 100km/h forecast in parts of the state.
The wild weather also caused widespread power outages across western Sydney. Ausgrid said about 40,000 customers were without electricity after high winds damaged part of a substation, while another 50,000 customers on the Endeavour Energy network were affected.
Greater Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains were among the worst-hit areas, with Endeavour Energy reporting more than 250 fault sites. The company said crews were working to make damaged locations safe before repairs could begin, with power expected to return in the early hours of Sunday.
