Donald Trump and Marco Rubio are considering dismissing Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece amid allegations that she engaged in improper and potentially illegal conduct before and during her posting in Athens.
A senior US official told the Associated Press that the president and secretary of state were angry about the reports and were expected to decide what action to take after the Columbus Day holiday on Monday. The official spoke anonymously because the discussions were internal. ([apnews.com](https://apnews.com/article/364465fc46b023cacf2b70c94cc76ae2?utm_source=openai))
Mr Rubio is understood to be particularly frustrated. He visited Athens last week while allegations surrounding Ms Guilfoyle were circulating, with the ambassador attending most of his engagements and greeting him on arrival.
The reports have also placed the State Department under scrutiny. A second US official told the Associated Press that the department’s inspector general was assessing the claims, although it was not clear whether a formal investigation had begun. Allegations surrounding Kimberly Guilfoyle
The Wall Street Journal has published a series of reports alleging that Ms Guilfoyle threatened a Greek official, accepted inappropriate gifts and services, and sought to use her influence within the Trump administration in exchange for help paying a credit-card bill.
One report, citing text messages, alleged that she asked a Trump donor to settle a bill worth about $100,000 shortly before her confirmation hearing. In return, she was said to have offered access to senior administration officials.
The newspaper has also reported that Ms Guilfoyle promoted the interests of a Greek construction and energy company, allowed its lobbyist into private diplomatic meetings and told guests at a reception that the United States could undermine the Greek government if it chose to do so.
Other allegations concern private travel and her efforts to attend a Greek-themed event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The reports also raised questions about trips to France with energy-company executives.
Ms Guilfoyle has not responded publicly to each allegation. However, her lawyers, David Schwartz and Jesse Binnall, have denied wrongdoing.
They said the money she sought from the donor related to unpaid fees for public appearances and speaking engagements that took place before she was nominated as ambassador. Her lawyers also said she had sought and followed State Department guidance before taking private flights, and had complied with departmental travel rules.
The US embassy in Athens has not announced any change to Ms Guilfoyle’s position. The State Department has declined to comment on whether an inspector-general inquiry is under way. Mr Rubio initially defended the ambassador during his visit to Greece, saying: “Our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here.” But he later declined to endorse the claims or discuss them in detail, telling reporters that allegations from unnamed sources were not automatically established facts. Several senior Democrats in Congress have called for an investigation, including the leading Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as well as the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Any decision on Ms Guilfoyle’s future is expected to be taken in Washington this week. She is a former Fox News presenter and California prosecutor, and was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr.
