Jay Clayton is expected to be chosen as the White House’s AI czar, while the Trump administration is also considering keeping him in his current role as director of national intelligence, according to people briefed on the discussions.
President Donald Trump is expected to make a final decision shortly, three sources said. The White House has not confirmed the appointment.
The possible selection comes after Mr Trump announced plans to appoint an AI czar amid growing debate over the risks and potential of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence technology.
Leaders of the country’s leading AI firms met at the White House on Tuesday to sign voluntary safety standards. Shortly afterwards, Mr Trump told reporters he expected to name an AI czar within three or four days, saying: “We have somebody that’s extraordinary.”
Mr Trump had previously said: “Only High I.Q. individuals need apply!”
A White House official said: “Any personnel announcement will be announced directly by the President. Any reporting until then is baseless speculation.”
