Donald Trump and Marco Rubio are considering firing Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece amid a series of misconduct allegations, according to reports.
A senior US official told the Associated Press that the president and secretary of state were “extremely pissed off” over the claims and could decide Guilfoyle’s future as early as this week.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host who was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr, has faced allegations concerning her conduct since taking up the diplomatic post.
One allegation is that she asked donor Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 American Express credit-card bill in return for access to officials in the administration. Deters has spoken publicly about his alleged dealings with the ambassador.
Guilfoyle has also been accused of threatening a Greek official, accepting improper gifts and promoting the business interests of a particular Greek company.
The State Department’s inspector general is reportedly examining the claims, although it remains unclear whether a formal investigation has begun.
Rubio had initially defended Guilfoyle, but the Associated Press reported that his patience had begun to wear thin as further allegations emerged.
The secretary of state visited Greece last week, where Guilfoyle greeted him with a hug despite the claims surrounding her. She has not personally responded to the allegations, while her attorney has denied that she did anything wrong.
Trump appointed Guilfoyle as ambassador after her split from his son, but her diplomatic career could now end after only a short period in the role.
