The Atlanta Dream are facing the prospect of hosting WNBA Finals games in a 3,500-seat arena after scheduling clashes left their usual larger venue unavailable.
The Dream will meet the Golden State Valkyries in the championship series, with the opening two games due to be played at San Francisco’s Chase Center on October 17 and 19. Golden State’s arena holds more than 18,000 spectators and has been sold out for every Valkyries home game this season.
Atlanta’s home fixtures are scheduled for October 22 and 24, with a sixth game on October 29 if required. However, State Farm Arena is already booked on all three dates.
The 17,000-capacity venue is due to host a Sombr concert on October 22, while Atlanta Hawks games are scheduled for October 24 and 29. The Dream have used State Farm Arena for several regular-season games and all three of their previous home play-off fixtures.
That leaves Gateway Center Arena in College Park, the Dream’s regular home, as the likely fallback. The venue has space for about 3,500 basketball spectators, raising concerns about the contrast between the two teams’ Finals environments and the number of fans unable to attend.
Atlanta is understood to have explored larger alternatives, including Gas South Arena, which can accommodate more than 13,000 people, and Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion, with a capacity of about 8,600. No alternative arrangement had been confirmed as of Monday.
The uncertainty has emerged as the WNBA continues to attract larger audiences and increased commercial attention. The Golden State Valkyries, in only their second season, have reached the Finals after sweeping the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces.
The Dream, meanwhile, have reached the championship series for the first time since 2013 after sweeping the New York Liberty in the semi-finals. The franchise is due to move to State Farm Arena full-time from the 2027 season, but that agreement will not resolve the immediate venue problem.
