A 66-year-old security guard was allegedly attacked by two teenagers at Westfield Coomera on the Gold Coast, with footage showing him being punched and knocked to the ground.
Chris Price had approached a group at the shopping centre on Tuesday night when a confrontation allegedly began. Police said one boy, aged 16, threw multiple punches before a second teenager, aged 15, joined in.
The footage, which police believe was filmed by members of the group, shows Price falling and suffering injuries to his head.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, where police said he was treated for a concussion and a laceration to his head.
“We believe he sustained the head injury from falling on the ground, but also from the punches that he received,” Detective Inspector Mark Mooney, from the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch, said.
Teenagers charged over alleged Westfield Coomera attack
The 15-year-old was arrested and charged on Wednesday. The 16-year-old was arrested and charged later the same day after detectives identified him as the second alleged offender.
Both boys have been charged with serious assault of a person over 60.
The 16-year-old appeared in Southport Children’s Court on Thursday and was granted bail. The 15-year-old was already on bail when the alleged assault occurred and remains in custody, with a further bail application expected on Monday.
Police allege the group fled towards Coomera train station after the incident and may have boarded public transport. An entrance to Westfield Coomera was taped off as inquiries continued.
Investigations into the other people who were with the teenagers are continuing.
