Edson Alvarez’s future at West Ham United is in doubt after the midfielder was left out of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad for the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers.
The Mexico international had been expected to be in contention after regaining his fitness and featuring in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wycombe Wanderers. However, he was not included for Friday’s match despite making himself available.
Edson Alvarez future at West Ham under scrutiny
Alvarez’s continued absence has raised the prospect of him considering a move when the January transfer window opens. He has made little impact for West Ham this season after returning from a loan spell with Fenerbahce last term.
The decision to omit him appears to have been a selection call rather than a response to a fresh injury. Before the QPR fixture, Espirito Santo said Keiber Lamadrid was the only player clearly unavailable and that the rest of his squad was in good physical condition.
That leaves Alvarez facing an uncertain position at the London Stadium. The 28-year-old was previously an important Premier League midfielder for the Hammers, but his status has changed following his time in Turkey and West Ham’s relegation.
With competitive minutes proving difficult to secure, a January departure could now become an option for both player and club. West Ham could reduce its wage commitments and potentially bring in a transfer fee, while Alvarez would have the opportunity to pursue more regular first-team football.
Unless Espirito Santo’s view changes soon, the midfielder’s prospects at West Ham appear increasingly limited.
