Amanda Seyfried has announced her split from husband Thomas Sadoski after nine years of marriage, revealing that the couple have been separated for “a while” but remain committed to their family.
The actress, 40, and Sadoski, 50, share daughter Nina, nine, and son Thomas, five. In a joint statement, they said: “We have been separated for a while, and it’s proven to be the right move for us and our family unit. We’ve got each other forever – and it’s GOOD.”
Seyfried appeared to underline the amicable nature of the separation by sharing a photograph of Sadoski posing with a bearded dragon on his shoulder. She captioned the image: “#reptiledad.”
She also posted a quote about forgiveness, protecting the heart and living fully, adding: “Yes yes yes.”
The announcement came after a demanding period for the actress, who has combined motherhood with a busy acting schedule and running her toy company, Make It Cute.
Amanda Seyfried’s year of scrutiny
Seyfried has starred in four films and a television series since last year, with two further films in post-production. She previously acknowledged the strain of her workload, telling Us Weekly: “Honestly, right now, it’s really hard. This is the most I’ve ever worked with two kids, and I’ve never had two movies come out at the same time. And so, I’m a little bit bananas right now.”
Her public comments have also brought controversy. During a Variety Actors On Actors discussion with Adam Brody last July, the pair spoke about their knowledge of rumours surrounding disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein.
Seyfried said she “didn’t know the extent” of Weinstein’s abuses, while Brody said he “knew he was scary” but had not heard anything sexual before Weinstein was exposed in 2017.
The conversation attracted criticism after Seyfried recalled meeting Weinstein at the premiere of her 2013 film Lovelace. Fans objected to what they described as laughter during the discussion, although neither Seyfried nor Brody publicly addressed the backlash.
Three months later, Seyfried faced further calls for her to be cancelled after describing conservative influencer Charlie Kirk as “hateful” following his death in a shooting at Utah Valley University.
She also reshared a meme which read: “You can’t invite violence to the dinner table and be shocked when it starts eating.”
After criticism, Seyfried said: “We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity.” She added that she could be angry about “misogyny and racist rhetoric” while also believing Kirk’s murder was “absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable”.
“No one should have to experience this level of violence,” she wrote, adding: “This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”
Seyfried said she did not want to “add fuel to a fire” and described her remarks as having been taken out of context. She did not apologise for the original comment and hired a bodyguard until the controversy subsided. Former fans subsequently said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that they would boycott her future work.
She was promoting The Housemaid at the time, a film starring Sydney Sweeney, and continued working as awards season began. Seyfried received two Golden Globe nominations in January for The Testament Of Ann Lee and the television series Long Bright River, but did not win either award.
Footage from the ceremony prompted further discussion after she appeared disappointed when Rose Byrne won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture. Fans claimed Seyfried had been overlooked, while a brief grimace followed by applause became the subject of online commentary.
Family life and the end of the marriage
Alongside the pressures of work and public scrutiny, Seyfried was mourning the death of her Australian shepherd, Finn, who died in July aged 16. She adopted the dog while working on the HBO series Big Love and paid tribute by sharing photographs captioned: “This one’s forever and ever.”
Seyfried and Sadoski bought a home in Stone Ridge, an upstate New York hamlet, in 2013 so their children could attend local schools and grow up away from the spotlight. She has previously said that living there offered “privacy, peace and nature”.
The couple have not said when they separated. They appeared together at a Golden Globes party on January 9, which was their last public appearance as a couple mentioned in the announcement.
Seyfried and Sadoski first met in 2015 while appearing in the off-Broadway play The Way We Get By. They later worked together on The Last Word, in which they played love interests, and began dating in real life.
They married in a private ceremony in California in March 2017, days before the birth of their daughter.
