Austin police are investigating two separate homicides after two men were found dead at homes in the Texas city in the early hours of Wednesday, 23 September. Detectives believe the cases are unrelated.
The first incident was reported shortly after 3am in the 1000 block of Springdale Road in East Austin, where residents reported a disturbance and possible gunshots.
Officers found an adult man inside a property with signs of trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Austin Police Department Officer Aaron Townsend said a male acquaintance of the victim had left before officers arrived. Police know the man’s identity, but have not released a description and he had not been taken into custody.
The death is being investigated as Austin’s 42nd homicide of 2026, according to police. Investigators said there was no known threat to the wider public, while witnesses were being interviewed.
Second homicide reported in South Austin
At about 3.51am, officers were sent to the 200 block of Vertus Bend following a report involving a possible shooting or stabbing.
They found another adult man suffering from obvious trauma in the front garden of a home. Officers attempted life-saving treatment, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not confirmed how the man was injured. People at the property are co-operating with detectives, who are working to establish what led to both deaths.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
