A Dolton police officer has been placed on leave after footage of a confrontation with a man outside his home in neighbouring Calumet City was widely shared online, prompting an investigation into a subsequent shooting.
The videos, recorded by doorbell cameras and a mobile phone, appear to show officer Terry Young following Shaun Brown to his property on Saturday after a traffic-related encounter. Brown says the police vehicle’s emergency lights were not activated during the pursuit.
Brown alleges that Young slapped him during the confrontation and that he told the officer he was being recorded before ordering him to leave the property. Footage appears to show Young calling for assistance as Brown attempts to enter his house.
Brown said the officer then fired several shots, striking the building. He later posted the recordings on social media and claimed Young had tried to kill him.
“Quite frankly, the shooting is more like gangster tactics than police tactics,” Brown’s lawyer, Basileios “Bill” J. Foutris, said. “You stand outside somebody’s house and just start shooting at it.”
Dolton police said they were aware of the footage and were investigating. Young has been placed on leave while the circumstances surrounding the shooting are examined.
Brown contacted Calumet City police after the incident, but was later arrested by Dolton officers over a traffic violation. He was taken into custody and has not been accused in the material released of any offence connected to the shooting.
Brown and Foutris are considering possible legal action. Young was previously named in a report concerning the security detail of former Dolton mayor Tiffany Henyard.
