Duncan Sheik has been hospitalised in critical but stable condition, his official Instagram account has announced. The 56-year-old singer and composer is receiving medical care, although no details about his condition have been disclosed.
A statement shared on Wednesday said: “Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition.”
It added that the family would not release further medical information and asked for privacy, saying updates would be provided when appropriate.
Sheik had referred to being in hospital in several Instagram posts in recent weeks. In one post, alongside a selfie wearing a hospital gown, he wrote: “I would prefer to be home making music. But a bit of reflection is not too bad … boring hospital stays have their benefits (outside the obvious.)”
On September 7, he shared another selfie from hospital with the caption: “Out of here in 60 hours.”
The announcement comes shortly before performances begin for Sheik’s new Off-Broadway musical, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, on September 25. Spring Awakening, the musical for which he wrote the music, is also due to return in a major Off-Broadway production in November.
Spring Awakening first opened on Broadway in 2006 and starred Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. Sheik won Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for his work on the production.
