Emma Barnett is set to leave BBC Radio 4’s Today programme after her proposals to reduce its political coverage and introduce more human-interest material met resistance from senior figures, BBC sources have said.
The 41-year-old broadcaster, who joined the flagship programme in 2024 after presenting Woman’s Hour, is expected to be given her own current affairs podcast on BBC Sounds.
The BBC has not formally announced her departure. However, senior sources said her exit was effectively agreed, with the decision understood to have been under discussion for several months.
One insider said her suggested changes were opposed because “that is not what the programme is and that is not what people wanted it to do”.
Ms Barnett’s departure follows that of fellow presenter Amol Rajan, who left the programme days earlier. Their exits represent a significant turnover at Today, particularly compared with the 32 years John Humphrys spent as its host.
News of Ms Barnett’s departure began circulating a day after a tense interview with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch about plans to reduce welfare spending. The exchange saw the pair repeatedly clash, while listeners questioned why Ms Barnett had conducted the interview instead of Nick Robinson, the programme’s recognised political specialist.
Some insiders have rejected the suggestion that the Badenoch interview directly triggered the decision. One said the departure had “been in the offing for months” and that the interview had confirmed the view held by those involved.
The change is also expected to ease reported tensions within the presenting team. It has been claimed that Ms Barnett and Mr Robinson were barely speaking to one another.
Ms Barnett is understood to have concluded that she was not a natural fit for Today and had questioned her suitability for the programme before taking the role. Producers are said to want a replacement with an established area of expertise to join Mr Robinson, Anna Foster and Justin Webb.
A BBC spokesman declined to answer questions about the reported departure. Ms Barnett was unavailable for comment.
