Fashion trends are always changing, which means that many items that were once considered exclusive, expensive and chic are now viewed as unfashionable and tacky. Â
Expensive accessories that were previously hot and are now unacceptable have become a topic of conversation all over Reddit, where fashion fans eschew brand name baubles and mock people who opt for pricey handbags and accessories that they now brand as out-of-date.Â
The most impossible to procure purses no longer signify wealth, according to fashion fans, and certain lavish jewelry can be considered try-hard.
To examine which expensive trends are over and the items to swap them for instead, the Daily Mail spoke to fashion experts. Â
According to accessories designer Kari Dowiak: ‘Once something is instantly recognizable by the masses and available on TikTok shop (real or dupe), it’s ruined.’
Dowiak, who founded the luxury eyewear brand MemorÃ, told the Daily Mail that she considers Van Cleef Alhambra motif jewelry, Cartier love bangles and Gucci slides examples of ‘accessories that have had virality ruin their status as a symbol of luxury and taste.’Â
The former fashion buyer thinks it is now far more chic to shop archival runway pieces like Tom Ford era Gucci that other tastemakers recognize.
Other items that top the tacky list? Labubus, Birkins, Rolexes and the Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch has become highly controversial because many wearers insist on pairing it with everything, even for formal occasions. Above, a woman wears hers during Copenhagen Fashion Week

Tech aficionados used to wait patiently for the latest Apple Watch to drop, but many are now mocked for wearing the pricey bauble to important events like weddings and galas.
On X, one person recently tweeted: ‘Please take your Apple Watch off if you are wearing a dress or formal attire. You look like a spy kid.’
On Reddit, the topic is equally contentious, with people questioning if it is acceptable to don the tech on your wedding day.Â
While commenters said it is acceptable for medical reasons, they said otherwise it looks ‘clunky.’Â
Some brides have found creative ways to wear their Apple Watches, like disguising it with a customizable band or in one case, hiding it in her bra.Â
Dowiak compared wearing an Apple Watch to a formal event to pairing Crocs with a black tie gown, calling the choice ‘practical but in poor taste.’Â
Want to swap your Apple Watch for a Rolex? You can, but be careful. Â
Stylist Sasha Hlavinka warned the Daily Mail that ‘Rolexes can be tacky if they’re blinged out with diamonds.’ Instead, the wardrobe builder prefers small vintage Rolexes for women, and a classic timepiece for a man.

Birkins are notoriously hard to get , but that does not mean they are still a status symbol
Hermes Birkin bags are notoriously hard to get, but that does not mean they are still a status symbol for the ultra-wealthy.
Many fashion fans are actually appalled when proud Birkin owners carry the enormous bags to evening events, where a smaller bag is more appropriate.
Dowiak explained that a decade ago, a Birkin ‘was a sign to other people with style, money and power, that you were one of them’ but ‘now, it’s just a sign that you want to look like you have style, money, and power – which is tacky.’Â
Hlavinka thinks a Birkin can still be chic, as long as you keep it casual, which is how the design was originally intended.
‘Wear your Birkin with sweatpants,’Â Hlavinka suggested, adding that the bag should look ‘beat up.’Â
It’s not just the bag you wear that gives away your status – bag charms are also signifiers.
At one point, Gen Z fashion fans went wild on their quest to procure a kitschy Labubu to attach to their bags, with some even paying thousands of dollars for the tiny toy.
‘Labubus were never chic, no one with a true understanding of the fashion industry thought they would be anything more than a fad,’ Dowiak said.
While Labubus are no longer considered cool, Hlavinka believes specific designer bag charms are still acceptable, as long as it is not ‘over-curated.’Â
