A man accused of throwing a plate of nachos at a woman and child at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is expected to face assault charges, police have said.
The alleged incident occurred at about 8pm on Saturday during or after Hawthorn’s nine-point defeat by Brisbane. Neither the woman nor child was injured, but the woman reported the matter to police the following day.
A 34-year-old Seaford man was interviewed on Tuesday and is expected to be charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful assault and discharging a missile.
The game ended with dozens of fans throwing cans and bottles at umpires as they left the ground. Supporters also booed contentious decisions made late in the match.
Police said five fans had been fined over their behaviour. They included a 40-year-old Croydon man accused of throwing a bottle which struck a woman.
On Wednesday, police said a 56-year-old Tullamarine man had also been interviewed after allegedly throwing a bottle on to the field after the match. He was issued with a penalty notice and fined $418.
“Police continue to make enquiries, along with key stakeholders, in relation to the incident,” police said.
