Fremantle have been given permission to use their Wharfie Time activation during Saturday’s AFL grand final against the Brisbane Lions, after reaching an agreement with the league.
The Dockers had been negotiating with the AFL over the activation, with the terms settled on Wednesday. It can be played only after a Fremantle goal.
The arrangement gives Fremantle the same freedom as both teams have to use a goal song, but Wharfie Time will be available just once during the match. The Dockers will therefore have to decide when to deploy it and which player’s goal will prompt its use.
The Brisbane Lions have their own established celebration, with Country Roads played for Charlie Cameron goals. Unlike that song, however, Wharfie Time cannot be used repeatedly.
Fremantle have used the activation twice this year, although it attracted national attention after the Dockers came from behind to defeat Hawthorn.
