Former Bachelor star Sam Wood is expected to spend the coming weeks in custody after being refused bail over alleged domestic violence offences involving his wife, Snezana, in Noosa. He has instructed his legal team to take his bail bid to the Supreme Court of Queensland.
Wood, 46, was transferred to Brisbane Correctional Centre in Wacol on Friday morning after appearing at Maroochydore Magistrates Court, where his initial bail application was rejected.
The charges relate to an alleged incident at a luxury apartment on the Sunshine Coast on October 3, while Wood, Snezana and their four children were on school holidays.
The court heard Snezana told police she had been choked to “cessation of breath” and believed she was going to die. She also alleged that her head was banged against the floor and that she could not breathe before the incident ended when someone called out.
Wood’s lawyer told the court his client denied strangling Snezana and might argue self-defence. The lawyer said there had been hostilities, with Snezana allegedly moving towards Wood and continuing to yell before he pushed her away.
The court heard Wood’s 21-year-old stepdaughter, Eve Markoski-Wood, intervened and called triple-0.
Wood has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting. He has not entered pleas and is expected to return to Maroochydore Magistrates Court in November.
Sam Wood’s life behind bars
At Brisbane Correctional Centre, new arrivals are issued prison-green clothing, photographed and may undergo a psychological assessment before being assigned accommodation.
Most prisoners are housed in shared cells with a bed, toilet and shower. New arrivals are often placed in the S6 unit, which was designed for 60 prisoners and has reportedly been affected by overcrowding following tougher crime legislation in Queensland.
Wood’s routine is now governed by set times for meals, lock-ins and movement around the facility, a sharp contrast to the luxury holidays, waterfront lifestyle and multimillion-dollar fitness business associated with his public profile.
A scheduled marketing email sent to subscribers on Sunday continued to promote his fitness challenge, despite his arrest and the charges. It began, “G’day, it’s Sam here”, and urged readers to join an eight-week programme ahead of summer, advertised at $12.50 a week.
DBG Health, which owns 28, said on Tuesday that Wood had been officially terminated following his arrest.
Wood became nationally known after appearing on The Bachelor in 2015, where he met Snezana, and later built a successful fitness and wellness business.
