Former Bachelor star Sam Wood is expected to take his failed bail application to the Supreme Court of Queensland after being remanded in custody over alleged domestic violence offences involving his wife, Snezana.
The 46-year-old has been transferred to Brisbane Correctional Centre in Wacol, where he is expected to spend the coming weeks following his appearance at Maroochydore Magistrates Court.
Wood is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting. He has not entered pleas.
The court heard Snezana told police she had been choked to “cessation of breath” and feared she was going to die. She also alleged that her head was banged against the floor and that she was unable to breathe before the incident stopped when someone called out.
Wood’s lawyer said his client denied strangling Snezana and could argue self-defence. The lawyer told the court there had been hostilities, and that Snezana had moved towards Wood and continued yelling before he pushed her away.
The court also heard the couple’s 21-year-old daughter, Eve Markoski-Wood, intervened during the alleged incident and called triple-0.
The family had been staying at a luxury apartment in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast during the school holidays when the alleged incident took place on October 3.
Sam Wood’s new routine in custody
Wood’s move to Brisbane Correctional Centre marks a sharp change from the public image he built as a fitness entrepreneur and promoter of family life.
New arrivals at the facility are issued prison-green clothing, photographed and may undergo a psychological assessment before being allocated accommodation. Most prisoners are held in shared cells with a bed, toilet and shower, while new inmates are often placed in the S6 unit.
The unit was designed to accommodate 60 prisoners but has reportedly been affected by overcrowding linked to Queensland’s tough crime legislation. Wood’s routine will now be governed by set times for meals, lock-ins and movement around the centre.
A scheduled marketing email sent to subscribers on Sunday continued to promote Wood’s fitness challenge, despite him already being in custody. Signed off as “Sam”, it urged readers to join an eight-week programme ahead of summer, advertised at $12.50 a week.
DBG Health, which owns Wood’s fitness business 28, said on Tuesday that the personal trainer had been officially terminated following his arrest.
Wood became nationally known after appearing on The Bachelor in 2015, where he met Snezana. He later built a multimillion-dollar fitness business.
He is expected to return to Maroochydore Magistrates Court in November.
