Opposition housing spokesman Andrew Bragg has defended an idea to use superannuation as collateral for a home loan, despite Opposition Leader Angus Taylor dismissing it as Coalition policy.
Mr Bragg said the proposal was intended to improve the alignment between Australia’s retirement and housing systems. He stressed that it remained an idea rather than an agreed policy.
“It’s not a policy, but it’s certainly an idea,” Mr Bragg told ABC’s 7.30. He said some superannuation could potentially help reduce the amount needed for a first-home deposit, or be used alongside cash to offset mortgage interest.
“So what we’re seeing now is high inflation, high interest rates, people paying a lot of interest on their mortgage,” he said. “So I think a lot of people would be interested in these ideas being further considered.”
Mr Taylor said the proposal was not Coalition policy and that the opposition’s formal position would be unveiled soon.
