Former Bay City Rollers guitarist Neil Henderson has died aged 73, after a career that included performing on the Scottish group’s first charting single.
Henderson was with the band from 1970 to 1972 and played on Keep On Dancing. He left soon after the release of its second single, before the group became international stars during the era later known as Rollermania.
His daughter Shona said music remained central to his life. Following the death of his wife, Henderson established a recording studio at his home in the west of Scotland, where he continued to pursue his passion.
After departing the Bay City Rollers, he joined fellow Scottish band Middle of the Road, which had achieved international success with the chart-topping song Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.
Middle of the Road led tributes to Henderson, describing him as “our original lead guitarist, songwriter and friend”.
“We wish to send our sincere condolences to Heather and Shona, his two daughters, and all his family and friends,” the band said.
“His memory will live on with all who had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him as will his music.”
Henderson is survived by his two daughters. His cause of death has not been publicly released.
