The Orlando Fire Department held a candlelight remembrance ceremony on Friday to honour firefighters, police officers and other first responders who died in the September 11 attacks.
The 25th annual ceremony took place at Fire Station 1 in downtown Orlando, where fire personnel lit 404 candles in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Of those candles, 343 were red for firefighters, 60 were blue for law enforcement officers from the New York Police Department and Port Authority, and one was white for FDNY chaplain Father Mychal Judge. Twenty-five fire helmets were also placed as part of the tribute, marking the 25 years since the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
The ceremony also recognised first responders who later died from illnesses linked to exposure to toxic chemicals and debris at Ground Zero, as well as the continuing impact of September 11 on the fire service.
The Orlando Fire Department has held the annual remembrance since 2002. The event was hosted at Fire Station 1, at 78 West Central Boulevard, as part of wider commemorations across Central Florida marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
