Two people have died after a minivan crashed into six other vehicles at a busy intersection in East Palo Alto, California, on Tuesday morning.
The collision happened at about 8.20am at Bay Road and University Avenue, involving seven vehicles in total, including a SamTrans Ride Plus van.
The driver of the minivan, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passenger was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Three other people were injured in the crash, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The victims’ names had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.
The intersection was closed for around four hours while the sheriff’s office’s Major Accident Investigation Team examined the scene. Bay Road and University Avenue had reopened by about 12.30pm.
Authorities have not said what caused the collision. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has further information is being asked to contact the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
