Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik has died at the age of 56, according to a statement posted on his social media accounts.
Sheik, whose 1996 single Barely Breathing earned him a Grammy nomination, died on Thursday. No cause of death was given.
The announcement featured a photograph of Sheik smiling while holding his guitar. It described him as a father, husband, brother and friend, and paid tribute to his wit, intelligence and “depth of spirit”.
“The world has a lost (sic) a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater,” the statement said. “Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”
Sources with direct knowledge said the Grammy-nominated musician had been receiving care in the intensive care unit of a New York City hospital earlier this week.
Sheik broke into the music scene with his self-titled debut album in 1996. Barely Breathing, a pop-rock track from the record, became his breakthrough hit, while the album went gold in the United States.
