Online sports gambling addiction is the focus of the lead report in this week’s edition of “CBS News Sunday Morning”, which examines the rapid growth of betting since it was legalised beyond Nevada in 2018.
The programme says the amount legally wagered on sport has risen to $167 billion a year. It also highlights data indicating that bankruptcies and credit-card delinquencies increase by 25% in states where online gambling has been legalised.
Correspondent Jim Axelrod speaks to a gambler who wagers his annual income, while examining how betting platforms FanDuel and DraftKings interact with customers. The companies are now the subject of lawsuits concerning the design of their platforms.
The report describes the rise of online betting as resembling “like crack in the ’80s”, as gambling becomes increasingly accessible through digital services.
The programme, hosted by Jane Pauley, will also feature an interview with Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang on artificial intelligence, safety and regulation. Huang says he does not believe AI will end the world by 2030.
Other segments include the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, founded by filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, and an interview with Hollywood executive Ari Emanuel about his memoir and career.
The edition will also examine the Smithsonian’s mission under retiring secretary Lonnie Bunch, Kentucky governor Andy Beshear’s political message to Democrats, and a New York public-art project featuring 40 life-size buffalo puppets moving through Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.
