Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall could eventually command a transfer fee of up to £80 million after committing his future to the north London club, according to former Premier League executive Keith Wyness.
The 20-year-old Sweden international recently signed a new contract after attracting interest during the summer transfer window. Tottenham are understood to have rejected a £46 million offer from Newcastle United before securing the midfielder’s longer-term future.
Lucas Bergvall contract strengthens Tottenham’s position
Wyness believes the new agreement could significantly increase Bergvall’s potential value and give Spurs greater leverage should other clubs return for him in the coming years.
Bergvall was previously contracted until 2031, while the exact terms of the latest extension have not been officially confirmed. Wyness expects the deal to keep him at Tottenham for approximately seven years.
His assessment is that the longer commitment could allow Tottenham to seek as much as £80 million for the midfielder, rather than accept a lower fee linked to a shorter contract.
Bergvall remains part of De Zerbi’s plans
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi continues to regard Bergvall as an important member of his squad, despite the uncertainty surrounding the player earlier in the summer.
The midfielder has made limited Premier League appearances this season, accumulating 72 minutes. He did, however, play the full match in Tottenham’s 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat by Liverpool.
Bergvall will now aim to establish himself as a regular starter, although competition for midfield places is expected to remain strong as the season develops.
