A second alleged gunman has been charged with murder months after a shooting at a home in Canley Heights, in south-west Sydney, which left one man dead and four others injured.
The 37-year-old man was arrested in Silverwater on Tuesday morning and charged with murder, possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit, and participating in a criminal group contributing to criminal activity.
He was remanded in custody and was due to appear in court later on Tuesday. A 23-year-old man was previously charged with murder and remains before the courts.
The shooting happened on May 19, when two men allegedly approached a home where five men were inside and opened fire.
Police received multiple triple zero calls as several of the injured men made their way to nearby hospitals. A 28-year-old man and a 32-year-old man arrived at Liverpool Hospital at about 8.30pm with gunshot wounds.
The 28-year-old died a short time later, while the older man was treated for a neck wound. About 10 minutes afterwards, two men aged 23 and 22 went to Fairfield Hospital in serious conditions.
The 23-year-old had been shot in the neck and the other man suffered a shoulder injury. A fifth man, aged 19, arrived at Liverpool Hospital about an hour later with superficial injuries to his arm.
Detectives are investigating whether the dead man was linked to a Sydney crime gang. Taskforce Falcon, which was established to tackle gangland violence, has been assisting the homicide squad with the inquiry.
Local police commander Craig Middleton said officers were aware of possible organised crime links but could not confirm them at that stage.
“This is a very brazen, violent attack on five people inside their home,” Detective Superintendent Middleton said.
