Jules Kounde could leave Barcelona in January, with the club reportedly considering a sale while the France defender’s value remains high. Chelsea have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old, although the interest has not been confirmed.
The latest reports from Spain suggest Kounde is no longer viewed as indispensable at Barcelona. The versatile defender has been an important player for the club in recent years, but his standing appears to have changed under manager Hansi Flick.
Chelsea’s reported interest revives a long-standing link. The London club came close to signing Kounde in 2022, when he was still at Sevilla, only for Barcelona to complete a deal worth €50 million.
Kounde subsequently extended his Barcelona contract in the summer of 2025, with the agreement running until 2030. Despite that commitment, the Catalan club are said to be weighing up whether to cash in if a suitable offer arrives.
Why Chelsea could revive their interest in Jules Kounde
Kounde remains a regular for France and has considerable experience at the highest level. His versatility is also expected to make him an attractive option to clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
France manager Zinedine Zidane recently named Kounde as the squad’s fourth captain. However, the defender appears to have lost his place in the starting line-up during the international break, with Pierre Kalulu starting two of the team’s three matches.
That change in status could add to the uncertainty surrounding Kounde’s future. While a January transfer may prove difficult to complete, Chelsea’s defensive problems at the beginning of the season could increase the possibility of a move in the winter window.
Whether Chelsea’s interest develops into a formal approach remains unclear, but Barcelona are unlikely to lack potential suitors for a player with Kounde’s experience and range.
