A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a 30-year-old man died in an alleged stabbing at a park in Mt Druitt, in Sydney’s west.
A second teenager, aged 16, has also been arrested and charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact.
Police were called to the small park behind the Club Hotel shortly before 9pm on Friday following reports of an assault. Officers found the man suffering stab wounds to his torso.
Police administered first aid before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived, but the man died at the scene despite efforts to save him.
A crime scene was established and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad took over the investigation under Strike Force Lanilo.
The 13-year-old was arrested at Mt Druitt Police Station at about 7.20pm on Sunday. He was charged with murder, breach of bail and an unrelated count of robbery.
An hour later, officers arrested the 16-year-old at a home in Cabramatta. He was taken to Cabramatta Police Station and charged in connection with the alleged killing.
Both teenagers were refused bail and are due to appear before a children’s court on Monday.
Police said they had obtained some footage of what Superintendent Brendan Gorman described as a “horrendous” incident, but were continuing to seek further evidence.
“At this stage, police have a number of lines of inquiry and we are looking for about a dozen people who were in the area at the time to come forward and provide help to police to solve this crime,” he said.
Investigators are appealing for CCTV and dashcam footage from the area. Police are also working to establish whether the incident was random or targeted.
