Alleigha Botner broke down in tears while giving evidence at the Caleb Flynn murder trial, as she read text messages exchanged with the American Idol alum, including one in which she said she wanted to kill his wife.
Botner told the court: “I just wish I didn’t say this. I didn’t mean it.”
The message at the centre of her testimony read: “I want to kill her, Caleb.” Flynn allegedly replied: “That makes two of us.”
Flynn is accused of murdering his wife, Ashley, and staging the scene to make it appear that their Ohio home had been broken into.
Ashley was shot and killed in February while the couple’s two young children slept in the next room.
Prosecutors allege she was shot twice in the back of the head. They also say Flynn sent Botner a series of disturbing messages on the night before his wife’s death.
One of those messages allegedly said: “I choose you. I’m free.” He then allegedly wrote: “Actions will come tomorrow, February 16, a day I’ll never forget.”
Flynn’s defence argues that there is no direct evidence linking him to the killing.
