A ground cinnamon product sold across six US states has been recalled after testing found elevated levels of lead, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced.
Galil Importing Corp, based in Hauppauge, New York, is recalling Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning distributed in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida and Illinois.
The affected product was sold between 18 November 2025 and 7 September 2026 through retail shops, grocery stores, delis and supermarkets. The recall was announced on 24 September.
Testing of a sample collected and analysed by the Maryland Department of Health found elevated lead levels, prompting the voluntary recall. No illnesses had been reported in connection with the product as of the FDA’s announcement.
The recalled cinnamon comes in transparent plastic containers weighing 90 grams. Consumers should check for the UPC code 794711005484 and lot code GAP11304, which appears on the side of the container below the ingredient information.
Anyone who has the affected Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning should not use it. The FDA advises consumers to throw it away or return it to the shop where it was bought for a refund.
Galil Importing said it had instructed customers to stop selling and distributing the product and to place remaining stock on hold. The company has also begun investigating its suppliers and introduced additional testing and verification measures.
Lead exposure may cause no immediate symptoms, particularly after short-term exposure to very low levels. However, higher or prolonged exposure can affect multiple bodily systems, with children at particular risk of damage to the nervous system, including learning and developmental problems.
