Taylor Swift fans believe her new song “Pink Clouding” may be about her brief 2016 romance with actor Tom Hiddleston, a decade after the pair ended their relationship.
The track appears to reflect on an intense but short-lived romance, with Swift singing about leaving a former partner “up there on a pink cloud” and wondering years later how to apologise.
She also expresses regret in the song’s bridge, saying she fears she may have left “scars on a good person” and that he “never deserved” the way she treated him. The song ends with her hoping he “landed safely on the ground” and is “so happy now”.
Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston’s 2016 romance
Swift and Hiddleston first met at a pre-Met Gala dinner at Anna Wintour’s home on May 1, 2016. The following evening, they were filmed dancing together at the Met Gala.
Their relationship became public shortly after Swift’s split from Calvin Harris was confirmed. In June, the pair were photographed kissing at Swift’s home in Rhode Island.
They were subsequently seen together in Nashville, where Hiddleston reportedly met Swift’s parents. They also attended a Selena Gomez concert before travelling to England to visit his family and later going to Rome.
Hiddleston joined Swift and her friends at her annual Fourth of July party in Rhode Island, where he was photographed wearing a vest bearing the words “I <3 TS”. They were later seen at Los Angeles airport before travelling to Australia.
While in Australia, the couple visited a children’s hospital and spent time sightseeing and dining out. Hiddleston confirmed the relationship in an interview that month, saying: “Taylor Swift and I are together and we’re very happy. Thanks for asking. That’s the truth. It’s not a publicity stunt.”
He also said the relationship came down to being “authentic”, adding that public figures faced opinions about everything they did.
The couple’s split was reported in September 2016 after about three months together. It was described at the time as amicable, amid reports that their schedules had become difficult to manage while Hiddleston was filming in Australia.
Swift has not publicly confirmed that “Pink Clouding” is about Hiddleston, leaving fans to draw their own conclusions from the song’s themes and the timing of its release.
