Manchester United are considering a move to re-sign Scott McTominay, with the Napoli midfielder increasingly expected to return to the Premier League next summer.
McTominay came through United’s academy and spent several years in the first team before leaving for Napoli. His departure followed a period in which the club were seeking to improve on the Scotland international in midfield.
Since moving to Italy, McTominay has helped Napoli win the league and has continued to develop as a player. He has recorded 37 goal involvements in 82 appearances for the club, while also establishing himself as an experienced and influential presence.
Napoli contract talks could trigger Premier League interest
Talks over a new contract at Napoli have reportedly stalled, leaving the two sides at an impasse. The expectation is that McTominay could leave next summer, when he will be 30.
Napoli are understood to be seeking around €30 million for the midfielder, who would have two years remaining on his contract by then. That valuation is likely to attract interest from several leading Premier League clubs.
A return to Manchester United would provide a test of the club’s transfer policy, given McTominay’s age and the proposed fee. United may face competition, however, with a number of top-flight sides expected to consider a move for a player who has demonstrated leadership and versatility in Italy.
