Eleven teenagers and young adults were wounded in a shooting at a park in Macon, Georgia, after an argument between two groups escalated into gunfire, authorities said.
The incident happened around midnight at Carolyn Crayton Park, where a large gathering had formed, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. The victims were four 18-year-old men, two 18-year-old women and five 17-year-old boys.
An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were in critical condition, while the other victims were described as stable.
Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said the gathering appeared to have begun as a birthday party that was due to take place at an Airbnb in nearby Jones County. The group was asked to leave the property before moving to the park.
Several students from Central High School and Northeast High School were among those attending, Mr Davis said. Another group arrived at the park and a dispute between the two groups later led to the shooting.
All 11 victims were members of the birthday party, according to the sheriff. “I can’t remember the last time we’ve had this many people shot at one time,” he said.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing. The FBI is assisting because of the number of people involved, although Mr Davis said the evidence so far indicated that the incident was local.
