An 80-year-old employee at Deltona Lakes Elementary School in Florida has resigned after allegedly striking a pupil on the back of the head and has been arrested on a child abuse charge.
Maria Luz Graham, of DeBary, was arrested on 21 September following an investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The incident is alleged to have happened at the school in Deltona on 17 September at about 3pm. According to the sheriff’s activity report, the child told their parents about the alleged assault after being collected from school. The parents then informed school officials because Graham was an employee.
School administrators reviewed security footage and confirmed that the incident had taken place, the report said. Deputies also viewed the footage before speaking to Graham, who allegedly admitted hitting the child. Graham was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail at about 4pm on 21 September and charged with child abuse.
