Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickup trucks in the United States after identifying a defect that could allow the front fuel tank to leak or become detached while the vehicle is being driven.
The recall covers certain trucks from the 2023 to 2027 model years built between January 4, 2023, and August 27, 2026, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The agency said the fuel tank straps may not have been fully inserted into the vehicle’s frame rail, leaving the tank improperly secured. Ford traced the problem to periods when cameras used to check strap installation were not operating continuously at its F-150 assembly plants.
A loose tank could leak petrol, increasing the risk of fire, or lead to the engine stalling. If the tank separates entirely, it could create a hazard for other road users. Ford said drivers may receive no warning before the failure occurs.
The company is also including vehicles that had not been sold or had been in service for fewer than three months as of August 27, after determining that the defect was likely to appear early in a vehicle’s life.
Dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps and replace them where necessary at no cost to owners. The campaign is listed by NHTSA as recall 26V578000, while Ford has assigned it the reference number 26S69.
Vehicle identification numbers for affected trucks became searchable through NHTSA’s recall system on September 14. Ford owner notification letters are expected to be mailed from September 21, and owners can also contact Ford or a dealership to check whether their vehicle is included.
