Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis suffered an apparent hamstring injury while representing Greece against the Netherlands, adding to Mikel Arteta’s growing list of fitness concerns during the international break.
Tzolis started the Nations League fixture but was forced off inside the opening 18 minutes after pulling up during an attacking sprint. The 24-year-old immediately signalled to the bench that he could not continue.
Medical staff treated the Greece international on the pitch before helping him to the dressing room. The full extent of the injury remains unclear, with Tzolis due to undergo scans in London.
The winger joined Arsenal in a £34 million summer transfer after scoring 23 goals during his previous campaign in Belgium with Club Brugge. The club will now wait for the results of his assessment before determining how long he could be unavailable.
Arsenal injury concerns grow ahead of Leeds United clash
Tzolis’ setback follows hamstring trouble for Kai Havertz, who returned early from Germany duty, while Declan Rice withdrew from the England squad amid fitness and workload concerns.
Arsenal could therefore have three important players requiring assessment before domestic football resumes against Leeds United. The simultaneous absence of Tzolis and Havertz would leave Arteta with particular concern over his attacking options.
Arsenal will hope Tzolis’ early withdrawal proves precautionary rather than the start of a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but the club’s medical staff will need to establish the extent of the muscle damage before his availability can be judged.
